Connectedness

. . . you're about to take a bite of truth sandwich . . .

As the opening metal-guitar sounds of The Colbert Report come on, I head to the bathroom for a pee.

The window in our bathroom affords a view of several apartment buildings near ours. In one of the buildings, a rather lavish, high-end building about a block Northwest of us on Mass Ave, there are two apartments a floor apart from one another that each have large-screen plasma TVs in the same exact position in their living rooms. With the positioning of the TVs, and the angle of their windows, I get a great view of the screens from our bathroom. Both are displaying the Colbert Report. At that distance, it's kind of like watching TV on an iPod screen.

As I stand there peeing, listening to the opening music sequence of the Colbert Report coming from my living room, and watching it on two plasma-screen TVs a block away, I feel a true sense of connectedness with my neighbors. Thank you plasma-screen neighbors, with your well-positioned TVs. Because of you, I don't have to miss a minute of the Report.

I love this city.

The weird part wasn't that Honey, you know ... spoke. It was that she spoke with an English accent. It wasn't exactly a proper, "Received English" kind of English, but it wasn't quite an East End of London, Cockney type of thing, either. It reminded me of the Beatles. She had a sort of nasal thing going on. Like John.

I'm going to take this off of my plate and put my energy into these other things for a while. But this isn't a retirement message or anything dramatic like that. I'll definitely be back.

The memes have been flying all over the place lately. And I got hit in the crossfire. Twice. One in each leg. So here we go, six plus seven, plus one. Random/Weird/Quirky.

Lately my taste for "short" has dwindled down to one-sentence powerhouses. They're short and sweet, but they really pack a punch. The great thing about these little text candies is they can be consumed in an instant, while you go about your daily routines. The other day, for instance, I was brushing my teeth and came across this little gem.

A time-tested method for getting your taxes done on time and in order. It might be too late to put these lessons into effect for your 2007 taxes, but it's the perfect time to start thinking about 2008!

I'm taking a brief, week-long hiatus from this blog and from (almost) everything digital.

I always hoped I'd be saying this under different circumstances, but ... I am completely in Your hands. And since we're still in the lingering twilight hours of Web 2.0, and user-generated content is apparently all the rage, why don't You leave a comment and at the same time satisfy my narcissistic curiosities by answering the same question I posed to Mat: Is there a difference between the "Blog Me" and the "Live and In Person Me?"

In DC . . .

Anyway, let me get to the point: all of this is a very long-winded (and, yes, self-indulgent) way of me saying that if you're in DC or NYC you can (and should) catch The Jones at one of these two shows.

There's a new physical "feature" on my body. And I've been noticing it lately whenever I happen to be completely naked and looking down at myself or in a full-length mirror.

I haven't been to the Childe in several months. I miss it. And I know DC will feel a dent in its landscape as places like this are supplanted by chain retail and fast food sprouting up along Connecticut Ave in Dupont at an alarming rate. But the Childe will still play a vital part of numerous people's personal histories, including mine.

It's that time of year again.

As I ate, people walked past, and I listened to the strange temporal quality of their footsteps. The way they suddenly came into my aural bubble, and just as suddenly vanished. One moment they were there, in front of me, belonging to that person. These feet on gravel. The next minute they were gone, along with the person who brought them. These footsteps. Now quiet.

I just got the following 'Alert DC' text message.

This weekend's rally didn't have any catchy slogan or banner associated with it, and this was good. It was refreshing. It was just a gathering of people protesting the war. Oh, and Jane Fonda was there.

I'm back home. In DC. We flew in last night. And even though I truly loved seeing friends and family in Dallas, I am very relieved to be back on the east coast again. I feel grounded. I woke to the familiar sounds of car horns and sirens this morning, which kind of gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. And I'm ready to re-train my legs on how to do this thing called walking.
