Popping the Party Cherry in DC

So far, 2006 has been quite a year for landmark birthdays. Catherine and Matt H. both turned 30 in February; Papapol turned 90; Melanie turned 21; and in a couple of weeks, Ian turns 60.

Well, this weekend, there was another 30th, and this time it was Emily's. We hosted a surprise party for her at our apartment. We were a little apprehensive because it was the first party we've had of this size since our move to DC. We used to have big parties at our old place in Dallas. But we had more space there, not to mention a balcony. We've always felt our apartment here in the District wouldn't really be conducive to party-throwing, unless it was the kind of party that people spent naked and in close proximity to one-another. But I don't think they call those 'parties.'

Anyway, we were pleasantly surprised to find that, with some creative re-arrangement of furniture, and an ample supply of a social lubricant known as 'tequila,' our place can comfortably accommodate 15-20 people.

We served up some Tex-Mex fare: chicken and beef tacos, black beans, rice, guacomole. And did I mention there was tequila? Zack was nice enough to bring some 1800 Reposado for birthday shots. I can testify to the fact that it was as smooth going down the first time as it was the fifth. I also made some of my secret-recipe margaritas, which tend to cause spontaneous, irrepressible grinning for those who imbibe them, as is evidenced by these photos.

Thanks to everybody who came and thanks to Mat and Zach for helping with the preparations. And a big Happy Birthday to Em, whose actual birthday, I believe, is still a couple of days away.

But life has brought us to the Garden State and, I've got to say, aside from the constant ache I feel in my ass from being repeatedly violated by our township on our property taxes every three months, it ain't all that bad up here. Still, there has been something missing from our lives. Something that used to bring us great joy and that we really took for granted for so long ...

Friday was a 26-hour day that began in the dark hours of morning at Newark Airport and ended at a North Beach strip club. The devil built Columbus and Broadway out of discarded bottles of original sin, brother. And he called it good. Believe.

When I finally made it downstairs, shaking and about ten pounds lighter than I was the night before, the first of my neighbors began showing up with their July 4th game faces on, all full of energy and wondering what the hell kind of party this was where everybody was chewing Rolaids and talking about hairs on dogs and squinting at each other from behind sunglasses under drizzly skies.

And, on the other side, Harleys rumbling in the parking lot. Tattoos on display. Double D moms with "Don't Be Jealous" t-shirts. Suburban grey-beard banker bikers, bandana'd and leather-vested and flaunting their mid-life crises a month or two early.

I'm back home. In DC. We flew in last night. And even though I truly loved seeing friends and family in Dallas, I am very relieved to be back on the east coast again. I feel grounded. I woke to the familiar sounds of car horns and sirens this morning, which kind of gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. And I'm ready to re-train my legs on how to do this thing called walking.

And speaking of pure, this is about the point in the evening when we were picked up by a wedding-white stretch Hummer, tremendous in its indecency. Inside, multi-colored laser lights danced on the ceiling and in our hair as we sipped OJ and Peach Vodka from plastic champagne flutes while reclining on those magnificent dark seats.

Anyway, let me get to the point: all of this is a very long-winded (and, yes, self-indulgent) way of me saying that if you're in DC or NYC you can (and should) catch The Jones at one of these two shows.

There's a new physical "feature" on my body. And I've been noticing it lately whenever I happen to be completely naked and looking down at myself or in a full-length mirror.

I haven't been to the Childe in several months. I miss it. And I know DC will feel a dent in its landscape as places like this are supplanted by chain retail and fast food sprouting up along Connecticut Ave in Dupont at an alarming rate. But the Childe will still play a vital part of numerous people's personal histories, including mine.

As I ate, people walked past, and I listened to the strange temporal quality of their footsteps. The way they suddenly came into my aural bubble, and just as suddenly vanished. One moment they were there, in front of me, belonging to that person. These feet on gravel. The next minute they were gone, along with the person who brought them. These footsteps. Now quiet.

We've spent the last several days in the Bay Area for Catherine's dad's 60th birthday. Needless to say, it was a festive weekend, filled with way too much eating and drinking.
