MVP: Manning or Prince?

Monday, February 05, 2007 | comments (7)
First of all, let me say that I thought all Superbowl half-time shows would be forever eclipsed by the heavy flop of Janet Jackson's pasty-clad boob. Not so. Prince has taken back the half-time show in a big way. And he didn't even need to bare any skin. Unlike the football game, which was something of a comedy of errors, Prince's performance was spot-on. He's a pro. I'm not a Prince fan like Laundro is a Prince fan. Still, I like me some Prince every now and again, and Sunday night was one of those times. I've got a particular weakness for the '1999' and 'Purple Rain' era of Prince tunes. They remind me of the little white jam-box I got when I was nine, and Little Red Corvette on the tape deck.

So yeah. Half-time was crazy good.

And then there was the football game itself. A good game overall. Pretty exciting, thanks in large part to the rain. And you know what, okay, I'm going to stop beating around the bush, here. I haven't always been a fan of Payton Manning. I don't like it when his team beats the Broncos. But I'm going to show how big a man I can be and just come out and say it: I'm glad he finally got that Superbowl ring. The big game has evaded him for several seasons, and well, he deserves it. I know a lot of people love to hate Manning because he's just so damn good on the field and cool under pressure, and if he's not on your team those are bad qualities to have. And on top of that he's annoyingly funny and likable in those Mastercard and Sprint commercials. The guy's got talent and charm. Okay, okay. We get it. But come on, how much Payton Manning can we take already? Well, I'm willing to put all of that bitterness aside and say, "Good for you Manning." I'm happy for you.

But Prince stole the show.

That's cool people felt this way. I thought it was a good show. Awesome he actually played and didn't lip sync. But I guess that's his style. I totally thought the Dylan/Foo's covers were right on. I think he's still trying to keep the kids interested and he seemed to do it.

And you are right, his most creative and prolific output was 1983-1985(6) - It's also my favorite era. Basically all the Revolution records and 1999 which is basically the Revolution sans Wendy.

PS. Oh and I watched most of the football too! Can you believe it?! It wasnt so bad.

That's how it starts. With the Superbowl. Next season, it'll be the playoffs. Then after a few years you'll be jonesing for the pre-season to hurry up and get here.

How funny. Prince stole the show for me, too. Turned it sour and made me lose interest. I got a couple of good pics of him, though.

Let's not forget Prince's hair rag: priceless.

I was digging that performance. So much in fact that I played Prince for about 3 hours this morning. Big fan of the man.

Apparently, the reason he performed the FF song was that they covered one of his songs on an album w/o his approval. They only got it from the record label. So, he decided to one up them by playing of their songs and completely doing it better than they could possibly hope to do.

Awesome.

Wow. I didn't know about all the drama. He did pretty much nail that song perfectly.

I really enjoyed his performance. He has such a great range in genres and can truly play his own instruments (multiple),write and sing - live even! I am not too found of his most recent albums although the single 'Black Sweat' is just classic funky Prince - it came out last year I think..
- On a side superbowl note - I did flip to the Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl more than once, I mean c'mon puppies for hours upon hours - too ridiculous not to check out (and it beat the commercials of the game.)

Sometimes, brothers and sisters, my heart is filled with so much love that I want to just throw my arms around all of you and give you sloppy wet kisses on the mouth and get all naked and dance in the mud like it's 1969. And other times I want to burn every bridge I've ever built and cut the head off of this blog and tell you all to fuck off. But today, I've just come here to declare this: I'm jealous of all the people at my gym with their white, white shoes.

Anyway, let me get to the point: all of this is a very long-winded (and, yes, self-indulgent) way of me saying that if you're in DC or NYC you can (and should) catch The Jones at one of these two shows.

The weird part wasn't that Honey, you know ... spoke. It was that she spoke with an English accent. It wasn't exactly a proper, "Received English" kind of English, but it wasn't quite an East End of London, Cockney type of thing, either. It reminded me of the Beatles. She had a sort of nasal thing going on. Like John.
