The objective is Six Weird Things. I don't know if these are weird or not, but they're six things to remember about me.

Sometimes, brothers and sisters, my heart is filled with so much love that I want to just throw my arms around all of you and give you sloppy wet kisses on the mouth and get all naked and dance in the mud like it's 1969. And other times I want to burn every bridge I've ever built and cut the head off of this blog and tell you all to fuck off. But today, I've just come here to declare this: I'm jealous of all the people at my gym with their white, white shoes.

Anyway, let me get to the point: all of this is a very long-winded (and, yes, self-indulgent) way of me saying that if you're in DC or NYC you can (and should) catch The Jones at one of these two shows.

The weird part wasn't that Honey, you know ... spoke. It was that she spoke with an English accent. It wasn't exactly a proper, "Received English" kind of English, but it wasn't quite an East End of London, Cockney type of thing, either. It reminded me of the Beatles. She had a sort of nasal thing going on. Like John.

A little plug for a friend's band, who could open for Coldplay.

This is an album you need to listen to naked and sweating in an un-air-conditioned room with a slow-spinning fan overhead. Not that I've done that. Twice.

This past Christmas, during a group outing to the mall to put Christmas money to good use, C's mom wound up buying "The Story So Far", a 2-CD "Best Of" compilation of Rod Stewart hits. My outward reaction to this purchase was cool, non-committal enthusiasm. Inwardly, however, my reaction was ...

C went to California this weekend, and I went to Southpaw Prison in Brooklyn with A & K and a few others to watch Johnny Cash perform.

Casey Dienel has been in pretty heavy rotation on my iPod for close to a year now. Especially the song "Frankie and Annette," which I frequently put on "Repeat One," a setting also known as "OCD? What OCD?"

I've always fancied myself an aficionado of the pop culture, particularly of any variety born or raised in the 80s or 90s. And while I'm not the encyclopedia of information that my friend Mitch is, I am, perhaps, something of an abridged coffee-table reference. Or maybe a pocket dictionary.

It was fitting that I was in Montreal the day Oscar Peterson died.

One way to relax after a Sunday afternoon herding leaves is to have a couple of beers and sit on the couch with your hand under your belt and watch some football and feel good and fine and strong--and downright brawny, damnit, like the guy on the paper towel rolls--for having worked hard and for having cuts on your hands and dirt under your nails and an easy sort of pain in your muscles.

I'm going to take this off of my plate and put my energy into these other things for a while. But this isn't a retirement message or anything dramatic like that. I'll definitely be back.

Lately my taste for "short" has dwindled down to one-sentence powerhouses. They're short and sweet, but they really pack a punch. The great thing about these little text candies is they can be consumed in an instant, while you go about your daily routines. The other day, for instance, I was brushing my teeth and came across this little gem.

A time-tested method for getting your taxes done on time and in order. It might be too late to put these lessons into effect for your 2007 taxes, but it's the perfect time to start thinking about 2008!

I'm taking a brief, week-long hiatus from this blog and from (almost) everything digital.

I always hoped I'd be saying this under different circumstances, but ... I am completely in Your hands. And since we're still in the lingering twilight hours of Web 2.0, and user-generated content is apparently all the rage, why don't You leave a comment and at the same time satisfy my narcissistic curiosities by answering the same question I posed to Mat: Is there a difference between the "Blog Me" and the "Live and In Person Me?"

On Sunday, my friend Tom was interviewed by Liane Hansen on NPR.

A little over a year ago, my friend Tom signed a book deal with Random House. Well, one year and three months later, the book is finally in stores and I wanted to put in a little plug for it, and for Tom's Web site, which I built.

Publishing as we know it will die. Sad, but true. The happy part is that it will be resurrected. Saved. JA Konrath's genie told him how. I think they're good ideas.

As somebody who enjoys reading a good book, but who also spends a vast amount of time online, I'm interested in the debate over whether or not Google (or anybody else) should be allowed to scan all of the world's books and make them searchable online.

So Sunday I headed off to the bookstore to snatch me up one of these gems. Of course, I quickly realized, you won't find baby-name books in the 'Reference' section of your local Borders.

It was really cool seeing John Irving live and in person, but the evening was not without it's oddities.

One of the things I love most about having work to do is that it forces me to procrastinate. I like to say that it gives my procrastination purpose. And one of my favorite ways to procrastinate with purpose is to add new features to this blog.

I'd like to think that God had the best of intentions when he created chipmunks. But even God has days when he feels a little ornery, and all he feels like doing is kicking back and letting off some steam. So he invites Old Scratch over to his place and they smoke a couple of bowls and play a little XBox. And, over a heated game of Madden 2010 (they get advance copies of software) they think up ways to piss people off, or ruin Jason Lee's career.

There are a million and one reasons not to do something. But they all usually amount to one thing: fear. And let me just say that I've got some of the fear and some of the dread when it comes to this thing I've started, "Fiction Fridays."

You've had this happen. I know you have.

I've had a few late nights this week. Because it was time for a remodel. And remodels happen best at night. And I just hope my new neighbors don't have sensitive ears. Because my office shares a wall with them. And there have been keyboard taps coming from over here. Lots of 'em.

I've been reading and re-reading Hemingway lately, partly because I'm just enjoying his style, but partly because I'm hoping to learn, through osmosis, the art of writing while pleasantly pissed. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck in this pursuit . . .

Bloggers tend to blog about this subject ad nauseam, particularly people who have just started blogging. So it pains me a bit to go down this road. But what the hell. At the risk of making people sick, I have to now jot down a few words on this here blog about - here it goes - the act of jotting down a few words on this here blog.
