New Site Design

Well I've finally got my re-designed site up, and a new URL to boot! I'm still working on a couple of odds and ends - and still have to get my old photo galleries up ( in addition to posting several new ones). I welcome any feedback on the new look and feel.

Thunder

Tuesday, March 18, 2003 | comments (0)
This morning I woke up to the sounds of thunder in the distance. My clock stared a flat red 4:45 am at me. There was an uncomfortable, white gnawing in my stomach. Our air conditioner wasn't working and the fan was blowing semi-cool, humid air. The window was open to increase the draft. I rolled over and shut my dry eyes, but it was too late: I was up.

The thunder rolled closer and a soft tinkling rain began playing on the glass. I got up and sat in the computer room, hoping a change in scenery would be the trick I needed. I always turn off our server when it starts to thunder and lightning. I lost a hard drive once to bad weather. That was a lesson learned.

I eventually crawled back into bed.

"You okay?" Catherine said from the middle of the bed.

"Yeah. Can't sleep."

I lay on my side and thought about how small and helpless things sometime seem in the morning. Then, for some reason, I thought about President Bush and wondered if he felt that way in the mornings when he couldn't sleep; like maybe he just didn't want to get out of bed that morning; like maybe he just wanted to forget about this war; like maybe somehow the world would stop all it's rage and crazy shit and he could just take a few moments and relax and listen to the rain falling against his window, and not face the press today, not face the angry people all over the world who blame him (of all people) for violence, and call him arrogant; to not face this impossible situation. Ah, that would be nice.

It was strange to have empathy for a president who I didn't vote for and who I won't ever vote for in the future. This is an impossible situation we're in and, to me, there's no right or wrong answer and if you're president, you're going to be disliked no matter what you do. I'm just glad there are people out there willing to be in that position, so all the rest of us can praise or criticize or write blogs about things that are irrelevant, or whatever it is we do.

Google News

Wednesday, March 12, 2003 | comments (0)
I was typing away the other day when I suddenly noticed that there was a new icon on my Google toolbar - a 'News' icon. "Hmmm. What's this?" I clicked and went to Google's beta news service. I had seen this before, but thought it cool that it was now on my toolbar. Now, in regard to this news service, I could be cynical and say, "Ah, here it is! Look out Yahoo! Here comes another portal." But Google's offering this definitely seems to be the next logical step for them and they're doing it with the same taste and clean style they've always had. And they're not trying to own the content, which is good. Just link to it. Right on.

I like it. And this brings me to another point concerning Google - I can see where Google's acquisition of Blogger could be a great step for the Blogger service. I'm excited about what's to come in regard to this and it's good to feel optimistic about something these days.

Krua Thai

Thursday, March 06, 2003 | comments (0)
This weekend, Catherine and I went with our friend Jason to a Krua Thai. We had sticky rice with mangos because we had already had dinner.

There are several cool things about Krua Thai. Here's my top five:
5) It's located in an old Howard Johnson's that has an empty pool visible from the restaurant parking lot.
4) It stays open late, in fact, from what I could see the place really didn't start rolling until after 10:00 pm.
3) Unlike many Thai places in Dallas, it's authentic, very good, AND . . . it's cheap!
2) Non-stop karaoke is featured, which lends an air of surrealism to the sparse interior. This, along with the pictures of the owners on the wall makes you feel like you're in a low-budget Independent flick. I imagined I was an undercover spy in Thailand.
Side note: I've never understood asian cultures' penchant for karaoke, most of all the seriousness in which it is carried out.
1) One of the servers is very cute.

If you're a Dallas resident, or visiting, and fancy Thai food, I would definitely recommend this place.
